Conference play is in full swing and already providing some key matchups that could determine if teams will contend for league championships or fall out of the race. There are key contests in all of the non-AQ leagues. Here is a look at this week’s top games:
San Diego State (3-2, 0-1) at Air Force (3-2, 0-1), CBSN, 8 p.m. ET (Thu.)– A critical Mountain West game for both the Aztecs and Falcons, each who have lost to TCU. It will be difficult for the loser to keep up with TCU and Boise State for the MWC title. The Aztecs have scored a total of 21 points in their last two games–both losses. However, Air Force hasn’t allowed less than 34 points in three games against FBS opponents this year. Air Force has won the last three meetings in Colorado Springs by an average of 18.67 ppg.

It has been a strange odyssey for Texas Christian since the Southwest Conference broke up after the 1995 season. Since that departure the Horned Frogs have played in three conferences and developed into one of the nation’s top programs.
After playing in the SWC from 1923-95, the Horned Frogs were left behind as Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech merged with members of the Big Eight conference to form the Big 12. TCU landed in the WAC (1996-2000), then moved to Conference USA (2001-2004) and eventually became a member of the Mountain West Conference (2006-11). After posting eight seasons of 10+ wins and two BCS bowl appearances between 2000 and 2010, the Horned Frogs were set to join the Big East in 2012. But that may never happen, since it is now likely that TCU will accept an invitation to join the Big 12.

The Saturday evening games feature critical early season conference battles in Conference USA, Sun Belt and the Mountain West. In addition, there is the UNLV-Nevada rivalry game and a non-conference matchup featuring San Jose State and BYU. Although Troy and Louisiana-Lafayette will play a major role in the Sun Belt, the game of the night may be between a reeling Texas Christian and San Diego State, who had last week off after losing to Michigan.
The best of Saturday’s mid-afternoon games feature a MAC game between preseason favorite Toledo and upstart Eastern Michigan. Air Force, coming off its big win over Navy, will travel to South Bend to play Notre Dame. Southern Mississippi and Navy should be an exciting matchup as two powerful offenses face off.
