September 16, 2011 2:03 pm |  by

NCAA Football LogoThe Friday night and early Saturday afternoon games feature three in-state rivalry games and pair of Western teams traveling to Northwest Ohio.  Here is the best of the early portion of the weekend games:

Friday

4 (AP)/4 (Coaches) Boise State (1-0) at Toledo (1-1), 8 p.m. EST, ESPN – The Broncos have been idle since their 35-21 season-opening win over Georgia in Atlanta. Last Saturday, the Rockets nearly stunned Ohio State in Columbus, losing 27-22. The Rockets will be without linebackers Dan Molls (leg) and Robert Bell (rib). Last season, the Broncos crushed Toledo 57-14 in Boise. The Broncos will be the highest-ranked opponent to ever visit Toledo. The previous high-ranked team to visit the Glass Bowl was ninth-ranked (Associated Press poll) Pittsburgh, who was stunned by the Rockets, 35-31, in 2003.

Week Two Review

September 12, 2011 2:10 pm |  by

Toledo Rockets logoAs with every weekend, college football provides many memorable moments. Week two provided a near upset of a power, quite a few firsts, the end of some bad streaks and the continuance of an impressive one.

All of these games took place on Saturday with the exception of the Florida International-Louisville game, which took place on Friday night.

So Close, But So Far – Ohio State faithful hadn’t witnessed a loss to a fellow Ohio school since 1921. Toledo almost snapped that streak falling 27-22 to the Buckeyes. The Rockets failed to convert a fourth-down pass on the Buckeyes’ 16-yard line with 48 seconds remaining. The Rockets’ Eric Page caught 12 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns and completed a pass for a two-point conversion.

Week Two: Games to Watch

September 9, 2011 5:39 pm |  by

NCAA Football LogoThere are quite a few intriguing games to watch in week two. These games include a conference opener and eight games where non-BCS schools battle BCS schools. These are this weekend’s best bets:

Friday’s Game

Florida International (1-0) at Louisville (1-0), 7 p.m. EST, ESPN - After winning their first season-opener since 2004, the Golden Panthers will try and win their first game against a BCS opponent in school history (0-21 all-time).  They are 0-5 all-time against the Big East but four of the five losses have been by eight or points or less. Golden Panther all-purpose threat T.Y. Hilton had 283 all-purpose yards in last week’s win over North Texas—12 shy of his own school record. Louisville beat Murray State 21-9 last week.

The Big 12 Mess: How Does It Affect Non-AQ Conferences?

September 8, 2011 10:40 pm |  by

Big 12 logoThere is no doubt that the Big 12 is in a state of turmoil. By the time I finish this entry three more schools may have announced that they are leaving for the Pac-12, SEC or Big East.  How does the tenuous state of the Big 12 affect the non-automatic qualifying (non-AQ) schools and conferences? Here is a breakdown:

Conference USA: If the Big 12 remains afloat, SMU and Houston remain candidates to replace departing schools. Both used to be members of the Southwest Conference with Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. SMU has been open about its interest in joining the Big 12. However, in this day when conference expansion is based on television markets and not geography the Big 12 may opt elsewhere.
