Tuesday Night Football is Back
Tuesday night football (8 ET, ESPN2) on the ESPN family of networks kicks off with an important Sun Belt Conference matchup when Florida International (4-2, 1-1) travels to Arkansas State (4-2, 2-0). Both teams will be looking to keep pace with Louisiana-Lafayette, who is already 4-0 in conference play and has wins over preseason conference favorites, Florida International and Troy.
FIU started the season 3-0, however the Golden Panthers lost their next two games before snapping the skid with a 27-17 win at Akron in their last game (Oct. 8).
Since leaving in the first quarter of the loss to Louisiana-Lafayette due to an injured ankle, FIU quarterback Wesley Carroll has been hot in his last two games. He has thrown for 300 or more yards in back-to-back games–the first time a Golden Panther quarterback has accomplished this feat. His main target, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who battled through hamstring issues earlier this season, is now healthy, and has 17 catches for 246 yards and a touchdown in his last two games.
In FIU’s last game, Hilton became the Sun Belt’s all-time leader in receiver yardage with 3,134 yards. He broke the record of 3,128 yards set by Troy’s Jerrel Jernigan (2007-10). Hilton is one touchdown shy of tying the conference record of 22 career receiving touchdowns held by Middle Tennessee’s Kerry Wright (2001-04). He also needs 171 kickoff return yards to tie the conference record of 2,696 yards held by Arkansas State’s Brandon Thompkins (2006-09).
Arkansas State comes into the game on a three-game win streak, its longest since winning four in a row in 2006. Like FIU, Arkansas State also features a deadly pass-and-catch duo.
Quarterback Ryan Aplin leads the Sun Belt Conference in total offense, averaging 303.83 yards per game. Wide receiver Dwayne Frampton has had three straight games of 100 or more receiving yards and is the Sun Belt’s leading receiver with 7.83 receptions per game.
The Red Wolves’ passing game is something that concerns Golden Panthers’ head coach, Mario Cristobal.
FIU beat the Red Wolves last year in Miami, 31-24, but Arkansas State leads the all-time series 4-2.
