For the first time all season, Boise State is not the number one team in the weekly power rankings. The Broncos lost at home to TCU, 36-35, moving the undefeated Houston Cougars to the top of the rankings. TCU jumps from fourth to second while Boise State falls to fourth. Southern Mississippi remains at third.
There are no new teams in the rankings this week. Louisiana dropped to 10th after a 30-21 loss at Arkansas State, who checks in at fifth this week.
This week’s rankings:
The top four teams in the power rankings remain unchanged after all four recorded road wins this past week. Three of the top four teams are ranked in this week’s BCS Top 25. Boise State is fifth, Houston is 11th, while Southern Mississippi comes in at 22nd.
Only one team falls out of the top 10. Toledo falls out after a wild 63-60 loss at home against Northern Illinois. The Huskies are 10th in this week’s rankings.
There will be plenty to watch for during Saturday’s games in non-AQ action (yes, there are teams other than LSU and Alabama playing Saturday). There will be two MAC upstarts kicking things off followed by Wyoming trying to upset TCU in Laramie. Air Force will look to clinch its second consecutive Commander-in-Chief’s trophy while Houston’s Case Keenum and Boise State’s Kellen Moore will look to continue their assault on the record books. The nightcap will feature two of the top running backs in the WAC facing off.
Here is a look at Saturday’s best:
Tonight the Kent State Golden Flashes (2-6, 1-3) play host to the Central Michigan Chippewas (3-6, 2-3) in a Mid-American Conference clash (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET). At this point, both teams are longshots to win their divisions this year, but a win on national television would be a highlight in a season of rebuilding.
Kent State enters the game coming off a surprising home victory over Bowling Green (27-15). Entering the game, the Flashes had yet to beat a FBS opponent. Their lone victory was a 33-25 win over South Alabama. The Flashes problems have been on the offensive side of the ball where they rank 119th in scoring (12.75 ppg) and 120th in total offense (197.88 ypg).
Conference USA will have two of its top programs on display tonight when the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (5-3, 4-0) travel to Orlando to meet the Central Florida Knights (4-4, 2-2). The game has plenty at stake and the winner will still be in line to win its respective division (CBSN, 8 p.m. ET).
Tulsa ended September 1-3, with losses to top ten programs, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State. However, the month of October was much kinder as the Golden Hurricane went 4-0. In those four games, Tulsa won each game by at least 17 points and star quarterback G.J. Kinne threw 10 touchdown passes and only two picks.
